Embroidered Vs PVC Patches: Which Option Suits Your Custom Design?

Comments Off on Embroidered Vs PVC Patches: Which Option Suits Your Custom Design?

Have you ever tried to order custom patches and get confused about choosing between embroidered and PVC? Both of them look great, last a long time and appear everywhere, from custom military uniforms to biker jackets. They are quite diverse, behave differently and are suited for different specific jobs.

If you choose the wrong one, it does not indicate a wrong choice, but picking the right one can save you money and hassle. The right one is a much better choice as compared to a patch that gets peeled off just after a rainy hike.

This blog is a practical guide about the differences between embroidered and PVC patches that can help you choose the right one.

What Are Embroidered Patches?

Embroided custom patches are a decorative piece of fabric with a design, artwork or logo stitched onto them with the use of colourful thread and a needle.

What Are PVC Patches?

PVC patches are custom emblems that are made up of soft, moulded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rubber instead of stitched thread.

Key Differences Between Embroidered And PVC Patches

There are various differences between embroidered and PVC patches that can affect the appearance, functionality and durability.

  • Appearance And Textures

The first thing that people notice is the factor of appearance and texture in both patches. Embroidered patches have a raised texture of threads with a fabric feel and traditional quality and PVC contains a smooth, glossy and bold style with a modern 3D look.

If you want a patch that feels classic, you should think of custom military patches for military style cap, company uniforms or police badges and you can see embroidery often wins on appearance. This statement defines the perspective that adds value to the look. If you want a patch that can emerge with colour and look eye-catching at a distance, like a tactical vest or motorcycle gear, PVC has the edge.

  • Durability

Both of them provide lasting durability, but they hold up differently depending on where they are used. Embroidered patches are tough and can handle regular washing. The threads of the embroidered patches can fray and fade over years of heavy wear, especially with harsh detergents and sun exposure.

PVC patches are indestructible when you compare both. The moulded rubber often resists cracking, fading and abrasion. It cannot fray the edges as the threads can. If you compare the durability of both types of patches, PVC can generally outperform in rough and high-friction environments.

  • Water And Weather Resistance

PVC patches are essentially made with waterproof elements to survive rain, snow, mud and ocean spray. When it comes to the water-beading feature, the rubber surface has no fabric to soak through or mildew. Embroidered patches are made from thread and fabric, so they can absorb moisture effectively. They can survive rain, but take a long time to dry and hold onto dirt and odour if they stay wet longer. PVC is the safer choice here.

  • Detail And Design Complexity

If you want the intended logo with fine lines, a photorealistic gradient or tiny text, PVC can capture it more accurately and have a defined edge. The basic design is moulded instead of stitched.

PVC morale patches can hold onto sharp edges and small details that thread simply cannot replace or replicate. Embroidery is designed for bold shapes, classic logos and lettering. It also starts to struggle when the design gets intricate.

PVC is the safe choice when your artwork is detail-heavy. PVC can be more economical for highly detailed and multi-colour designs than the ones that try to replicate the same complexity in thread. It is worth getting a quote on both if cost is your decision factor.

  • Cost

Cost is important, especially for bulk orders. The pricing strategy for different types depends heavily on the design complexity and order size. Embroidered patches are effective when you want simple designs with fewer colours, as the process is well administered and more efficient at scale. The cost of a PVC patch is a little bit less due to the involved moulding process.

Which Is Better For Specific Uses And Applications?

You can choose the better one in a simple way when you compare these two patches.

  1. Uniforms

Custom embroidered patches are professional and traditional for police, corporate, fire and school uniforms. These embroidered patches can carry a classic and traditional look that is expected in formal settings.

  1. Tactical Gear

Tactical gear leans almost entirely on PVC every time. Custom tactical patches can endure constant movement, abrasion and mud. The differentiated nature of these patches makes them waterproof, flexible and a standard choice for tactical vests, morale patches and outdoor gear.

  1. Jackets

The type of patches depends entirely on the vibe. A technical and waterproof jacket may suit the bold and waterproof look of the PVC. For example, a denim or leather jacket can give a vintage and rugged aesthetic feel that often looks better with embroidery.

  1. Outdoor Use

If the patch will experience the elements, like hiking gear, camping equipment, and boat gear, then PVC is a more practical choice due to its durability and water-resistant nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I iron PVC patches?

No, heat can warp or melt the rubber in PVC, so you should sew on or attach them using hook-and-loop (Velcro) backings. Embroidered patches can safely use iron-on backing.

  1. Which of them support colour gradients?

Neither traditional embroidery nor moulded PVC supports smooth colour gradients (cleanly fading from one colour to another). If your design has photographic gradients, you should look into printed or dye sublimated patches instead.

  1. Which is best for Velcro patches?

PVC is widely favoured for removable morale patches because the rigid rubber structure holds its shape flat against loop panels without curling or sagging.

The Bottom Line

The difference between embroidered and PVC patches varies in texture versus durability and tradition versus toughness. Embroidery patches can add timeless craftsmanship for a classic feel for the uniform and heritage brands.

PVC patches can bring in bold colour, waterproofing, and modern durability for real-world use. A good patch supplier can help you choose the best patch type for your project.
