What If AI Replaces Lawyers ?

Comments Off on What If AI Replaces Lawyers ?

Dear lawyers, I am not saying your job is in danger. I am just mentioning that artificial intelligence has already taken over various jobs, including lawyers. Of course, no AI technology can completely handle your job, but your paperwork and other documentation work are made easy with this smart AI evolution.

Just like any topic of discussion, learning and knowing more about whether AI will replace lawyers or not has two different sides, including:

  • AI replacing lawyers can be a fruitful
  • Replacing lawyers with AI may not be the best idea

Now, to clear all your doubts and fears, let me take you through everything you need to know about AI and lawyers. So, without any further adieu, let’s dive deep into what if AI replaces lawyers. But before that, I am going to talk about how AI is already being used in law firms.

How AI is Already Used in Law?

Artificial intelligence was introduced to make work easier for everyone and lawyers are no exception. There are a few tasks that lawyers complete with the help of AI, including:

Reviewing Documents

Attorneys receive hundreds of documents every day that need to be reviewed properly for better understanding. Before AI, lawyers manually reviewed documents line by line to ensure accuracy and understanding.. However, reviewing documents is one such job that can be carried out by AI seamlessly. AI gives the crux of everything in the document, it can help identify the areas of improvement and much more.

Drafting Contracts

People approach lawyers so that they can be best guided when it comes to drafting contracts. But with the introduction of AI tools, drafting contracts has become one of those works that AI now handles well. A lawyer just needs to put a nice and appropriate prompt and the contract will be drafted effortlessly.

Answering Basic Legal Questions

Do you remember the time when there was no AI and people had to approach a lawyer even to get answers to basic legal queries? Lawyers were responsible for answering all the questions back then and if in case he had no answer, they used to study and do more research and ask the client to get back to them later.

But this practice is no longer being followed. Clients don’t approach lawyers for basic legal queries, they find everything on AI. And if in case someone approaches them, they even make use of AI to find answers. This proves that both clients and attorneys are dependent on AI.

How Will the Scenario Be if AI Takes Over Lawyers?

As far as I can think, AI replacing lawyers will have two major aspects:

  • Positive aspects, and
  • Negative aspects

If AI took over lawyer tasks, it could help people:

Save time & money

Can you recall the last time you went to a lawyer? How many times have you had to visit his office to meet him? Once, twice, or thrice? You had to leave your other important and daily tasks just to visit him and come back with disappointment because he had no time for you. Now, think of the money you might have spent on transportation daily, a total waste!

But with AI by your side, you are just one prompt away to get help. All you need to do is raise your query and get instant answers and solutions. No travelling far and spending more money on commuting and no more delays.

Make law services more accessible

AI makes law services more accessible to clients, this not only benefits clients but also the lawyers. A law firm that incorporates AI-chat bots in its websites makes it profitable for its firm by converting leads and getting potential clients. This even helps be available for everyone 24/7.

Now, if we talk about the clients, AI- chatbots let them be at their places and get answers. One doesn’t have to go and visit the lawyer in person to know whether they can help with the specific case or not.

Reduce human bias

If you look at history, there are instances where lawyers made decisions based on their personal interests and benefits. This resulted in an unfair opinion and biased final decisions. And don’t you think how many families and individuals might have to face severe circumstances due to this biased decision? Of course, they did!

But AI cannot be biased. It will always provide decisions and outcomes that are in favour of the right person. No one can bribe AI and expect it to make decisions in its favour.

What Could Be the Disadvantages of AI Replacing Lawyers?

AI replacing lawyers entirely has downsides, including;

AI lacks humans’ understanding

There is no denying the fact that AI cannot understand the way humans do. So, you cannot always expect an AI to help you accurately. Lawyers will have to step in every time there is a critical case or query. He will take time to think and then come up with a final decision.

AI decisions can be unfair

Although AI cannot be biased, it can be unfair based on its ability to give suggestions. Lawyers can think emotionally and practically which helps them to be fair with their decisions, but this is where AI lacks.

How About AI and Lawyers Working Together?

I have already made it simple for you to know where AI can take over lawyers’ jobs and where it cannot. So, I think that if AI and lawyers can come up together, they both can be the reason behind any law firm’s success.

  • While lawyers work on complex issues and questions, Ai can handle the routine tasks related to documentation and contracts
  • AI can suggest better strategic guidelines whereas lawyers can implement them for 100% success
  • AI can help attorneys make hard decisions by telling them about both the advantages and disadvantages of a scenario

The Final Verdict

I think I have made enough statements to prove that AI WILL NOT TAKEAWAY LAWYERS’ JOBS. However, it is crucial to note that lawyers need to adapt to the growing technology and they need to learn to work with AI. relying on AI will not make you a weak attorney, rather you’ll be called an expert lawyer with AI skills.
