What to Expect When You Hire a Solicitor in London

Most people do not have a solicitor that they use regularly. It typically occurs when it is already stressful — when you are buying your first home, when you are going through separation or divorce, when you are having to deal with an unfair dismissal, or when you are dealing with an estate matter involving a family member. The emotional toll of any case is enough, but there’s also the added insecurity of not understanding how the legal process works.

If you have never used a solicitor in London before, you can get a realistic insight into what it’s like to go through them step by step, from start to finish.

The Initial Consultation

The majority of solicitors will provide at least one initial consultation, which can be free of charge for 15 minutes or an hour-based consultation for a fee. This is your opportunity to describe your circumstances and to have an idea whether the solicitor is suitable for you. Be ready: have all relevant documents, a timeline of events, and questions at hand.

At this point a good solicitor will be listening rather than talking. They should be asking clarifying questions, pinpointing the core issues of the law, and telling you what they think your options are — and whether you even need to go to court at all or if there is a simpler solution.

The Engagement Letter

After you have made your decision, you will be requested to sign a letter of client care/engagement agreement. This document details the services you will receive, the fee structure, expected timeframe, and who will be dealing with your case. Read this carefully. It’s not about paperwork; it’s about the contract, which dictates the whole story of your working relationship.

If you don’t understand anything, especially regarding billing, don’t hesitate to ask. You’ll be surprised at how many minutes can be charged for a phone call or email from some companies, as they charge in six-minute intervals.

Information Gathering

This is typically (but not always) the least glamorous and most crucial phase. Your solicitor will require documents, evidence, correspondence, and background information relating to your case. In the context of a real estate deal, it could involve title deeds and mortgage information. In a job conflict, this may be emails, contracts, and witness statements.

This stage can be a longer process than you would like. Getting it right the first time minimizes potential problems later on, and proceeding with haste often leads to issues.

Ongoing Communication

A dependable solicitor in London will make sure that you are kept reasonably informed at all times, without being burdened with extraneous information. How often a contact occurs will vary depending on the nature of the circumstances — if it’s a simple conveyancing deal, it might be week to week or two to two, though a contested divorce or business dispute may require more frequent contact.

If you are always having to chase your solicitor for updates, that is worth raising directly. Feedback is important for most companies and a short chat can help clear up any understanding issues before they become larger frustrations.

Negotiation, Documentation or Litigation.

Depending upon the nature of the matter, your case can be negotiated, documented, mediated, or — in rare instances — litigated in court. Litigation is an expensive, slow, and uncertain process for everyone, and the majority of legal issues in the UK are resolved before ever going to court.

Your Solicitor should discuss with you the real probability of the various possibilities and the advantages and disadvantages of choosing one course of action over another, not the most aggressive (and costly) course.

Fees and Final costs.

Toward the end of your case, you should receive a final invoice, identical to the one you were provided in your engagement letter. A clear lawyer will have identified any unforeseen expenses before they took place, rather than when the event happened.

Case Closure

At the end of your case, a good solicitor will be sure to let you know what the next steps are, be it paperwork, registering a property or simply confirming that your case is closed. Many companies will also keep your file for a specified period of time in case any issues come up later.

Final Thoughts

It doesn’t have to be a big mystery when it comes to hiring a solicitor. Knowing what to expect will allow you to have reasonable expectations, ask better questions, and identify when something doesn’t feel right. From the simplest to the most complex of cases, having a clear and open solicitor in London to work with will make a difficult situation even more manageable.
